criminal justice reform
My career in politics started after I lost a childhood friend to gun violence. Since then I have been committed to making our streets safer while working to reform our criminal justice system. As Chair of the Committee on Public Safety I’ve held hearings on the NYPD’s cannabis enforcement strategies and the Special Victims Division while working to secure commitments from the mayor and police commissioner to create a new police precinct in Southeast Queens.
It costs over $200,000 a year to confine one inmate at Rikers Island. It’s time to close down this aging jail and reform our broken criminal justice system that has crippled the lives of young black and brown men and women.
